Period 3 Final Challenge

-Define the Problem (1pt) the problem we are trying to solve is to try and make it easier for a college student to put there bike in there dorm/studio apartment and make it so it doesnt get in the way of the student or damage property.
-Brainstorm Solutions (2pts) my idea is is to go out and buy some bike racks and then drill them into the wall, but the wall is close to the ceiling and put the bike up there. Another solution is to make a under the floor storage area so then you can just pull up on the latch and put the bike under the ground.
-Define Criteria and Constraints (2pts) Criteria- A principle or standard by which something may be judged or decided. Constraints- A limitation or restriction or stiffness of manner and inhibition in relations between people
-Generate Sketches (2pts)-Select an Approach: Use a Decision Matrix to justify your approach (2pts)
-Model your solution with CAD software: Post an Isometric view of your assembly and a multiview drawing. (3pts)
decision matrix./ sketch
-Use the 4 Quadrant Feedback technique to asses your model (3pts) my feedback was that i need to mabey make a better sketch and to add more detail which i could easily do. i also have tons of more id i though ideas that i though of.

Glider Challenge: Deliverables

Right below this is my glider. My first picture is my actual glider that we flow. It is made out of false wood and tissue paper. The other picture is my glider that i put together in the CAD program (prototype).
My glider didnt really work as well as i wanted it to. Actually our pre run worked better than our final throw. Right when we thew it off the balcony it just went straight down with no hang time! I do have to say it was a fun time making it.

Egg Drop Challenge: Iteration #1 Blog Post Write Up

Materials:

  • plastic bag
  • red kitchen rag
  • ribbon
Achievements: (1:12)
  • 3 out of 4 size
  • 2 out of 5 drop
  • 6 out of 6 crack vs. impact
  • 2 out of 7 weight
Achievements: (2:13)
  • 4 out of 7 weight
  • 3 out of 6 crack vs. impact
  • 5 out of 5 drop
  • 4 out of 4 size

Size of Material:
  • our parachute fit  in both printer box and show box.
Weight of Material:
  • our parachute was only 50 grams but it soared through the sky like a plane!
Accuracy of Egg Drop:
  • we hit the 2nd ring and i wasn't suprised at all because even though it wasn't the most creative it had a lot of hang time and we could make it land almost where ever we wanted it to.

"Computer Crunch!!!": A Process Improvement Challenge

Here are some way we can make sure that everyone gets a chance to use a computer:
  • rotate every 30 minutes, and save your work to your folder.
  • if people arent working on engineering related components then give the computer to someone who wants to work on engineering.
  • you can partner up with someone and they could so there work together.
Those are some ideas I thought of so that people can get there time on the computer.

TED pt I - Ideas worth Spreading?

1) What is the TED organization about?
the TED organization is spreading non-profit ideas that are worth spreading.
2) What is the purpose of their website and how does the functionality of their site support that?
the purpose of there website is to briing people from Technology, Design, and Entertainment togeather to all form ideas.
3) As Engineers and Problem Solvers, which topic areas (the choices from the "Show talks related to:" section on the sidebar) are of most interest to us? Justify your answer.
design/math
1. if your an engineer you are doing a lot designing when build and putting together you projects.
2. design is part of the 12 step design process
3. when brainstorming before a project you are designing it.
4. you use math in engineering when you are trying to find the measurements of you object, and when you are building your object you need to have precise calculations.
4) Based on your previous answer, what are 3 talks (videos) on the site that appear like they would be of most interest to you as an Engineer/Problem Solver? Justify your choices.
Video: Arvind Gupta: Turning trash into toys for learning.
this video is about how Arvind Gupta is finding ordinary trash items and turning them into toys for little children. the toys are well designed toys that can build themselves.
Video: Cynthia Breazeal: The rise of personal objects
this video is about Cynthia Breazeal and how she wondered why robots were in space but not in our living rooms. she tought robots to interact with people so children can teach, learn, and play with the robots.
Video: Handspring Puppet Co.: The genius puppetry behind War Horse
this video is about how Kohler and Basil Jones and how the created a puppet named Joey the War horse and he is very life like. he trotted/galloped onto the TED stage during one of there talks.
5) Each student will watch a unique video. Claim your video on the following period specific posts: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. If no one else has claimed your video, leave a comment on that post to call the one you want. If someone else has already claimed the talk, go back and pick another one. Watch the video. Embed the video in your blog post and create a bulletized outline of the key issues presented in the talk.
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ueli_gegenschatz_extreme_wingsuit_jumping.html

  • Ueli Gegenschatz wants to set a world record for flying off a cliff and flying the most distance and having the most hang time.
  • he also wants to make a jump that has never been done before.
  • he wants to make it so instead of landing with a parachute he wants to land with the wing suit, bu hes working on trying to make a landing with the wing suit.

6) How could you get involved in the field/technology/issue you chose to hear about? What experience/skills/training/education would you need to learn to get involved with this field?
i can get into the field by getting a degree in science and studying the physics of flying. i would need to be comfortable while up high in the air and you have to be a master at skydiving before going wing suit diving.

Reverse Engineering: Mechanicnal Product - Functional Analysis

1. What is the purpose or primary function of the object?
the purpose/primary function of this object is to be able to access any work that you have, or to explore whats going on in the Internet.
2. Make an educated guess as to how this product operates. Use simple machines’ terminology to explain the object’s sequential operation.
i think this product operates by all of the battery's and wires inside the machine.
3. Identify the system inputs, intended product function, and outputs. Use power point to create a "black box" graphic like the toothbrush example discussed in class. Save the slide as a .jpg image and post it to answer this question.
( this answer is at the top of the blog post)
4. What mechanical components are visible?
the mechanical components that are visible are the switches the control the power of the machine and the speaker switches.
5. What is it about this device’s function that you cannot identify, because the mechanical components are hidden from plain view? i cant identify the cords and platforms that actually make the machine run because they are inside the machine make it usable.
